  ACTIVITIES: Industrial Workers' Program

Despite all the challenges, project with industrial workers’ program in the 1st phase was a productive experience. Although, there is a need to modify the IEC material as per the needs of this target group for a clear understanding without being aggressive. WRC-Pakistan has adopted various measures and used different interventions to communicate with different groups of industrial workers. To make the first penetration in the industrial area it was necessary to select a factory with a large number of workers, a well established structure, and a supportive administration for a smooth arrangement and mobilization of the workers to participate in this activity. Akbar Group of Companies showed their interest in organizing this activity in their factory and termed it as their social responsibility. So the campaign was introduced to the labor class on May 30, 2007.

Considering the low level of literacy of the laborers interactive theatre was used to convey the message. After the 20 minute stage drama the audience was invited to comment on various aspects of the drama. The audience expressed different views while discussing the reasons which instigate violence against women within their class including Poverty, Low Literacy Rate, Social Pressures, Wrong Traditions, and Masculinity. Social Norms & Culture and Detachment from Religion. Similarly, an interactive theatre play was organized at Packages Limited. WRC-Pakistan received an overwhelming response and was invited to hold such sessions repeatedly with the workers. If violence can be dealt with at the level where it begins we can end violence for ever.
