Violence against women generates high social and economic costs like illness, invalidity, absence from work, care and medical costs, low work productivity, insufficient use of human resources in labor market, etc. These costs could be saved for efforts to reduce poverty and to ensure sustainable development.
According to a survey, the highest incidence of VAW is in the labor class of our country and hence there was a dire need for awareness and setting up measures in place to eradicate violence exercised by this particular group. Industrial workers form a huge group in Pakistan at the grass-root level and the religious aspect has a great impact on this target group as they relate to everything in terms of religion. So the awareness campaign had to be designed with religious examples for this particular target group to understand the parallels between religion and such initiatives.
There were positive aspects (admitting VAW as a negative behavior which is to be avoided) yet at the same time men always confuse basic rights of women as human beings with gaining ascendancy over men. Generalizations (typical roles and set perceptions of women) and parochial attitudes always make the advocacy work more difficult. According to the group, the major issues affecting them were poverty, health and illiteracy and for them issues of VAW do not hold the same importance. The need in this particular group is to highlight the relevance of this campaign with the other development issues and the effect of VAW at home on children. Entry points for other partnerships and activities are being identified and links have been established to take this initiative further. |
